*1 SEAT LEFT* April 29th Cooking Class: Oysters 101 w/ John Cole - Raw and Broiled

We’re partnering with Fred from FISH and guest chef John Cole in the Port Plums demo kitchen to bring you Oysters 101 in which you’ll learn all about one of our very favorite shellfish! From selecting and preparing oysters to plating and pairing with your favorite beverages, this intensive class will cover it all!

Two Ticket Options:

$75 Standard Class Ticket

$95 Hands-On Shucking - includes hands-on shucking practice and instruction as well as an oyster knife and a pair of leather work gloves to take home. 

We’ll discuss:

  • Varieties of oysters from different locales.
  • Sizes and uses of oyster species.
  • How to select, store, and open oysters – including hands-on practice!
  • How to prepare and serve raw oysters five ways.
  • How to prepare and serve broiled oysters five ways.
  • Pairing wines and other beverages with your oysters.

  • Oysters Casino
  • Oysters Rockefeller
  • Oysters Kilpatrick
  • Broiled Oysters with Wine, Bacon, and Dill
  • A Variety of Sauces


Please note: This is not a hands-on class. In this class you will watch and interact as the instructor prepares several dishes using a variety of strategies and techniques. You will sample from generous tasting portions of the demonstrated dishes.

What are my parking options getting to the event?

We are located in The Tannery Marketplace at 50 Water Street, Newburyport, inside Mill Building #4 which is on the Water Street side of the complex.

Parking lot and street parking is available. When attending a class or event with us, you may park in the 15 minute parking spaces in front of the store for an extended stay.  

Is this a demo or hands-on cooking class?

This is a demonstration-based class. 

Should I eat a snack before class?

We recommend eating something before the class. Generous tasting samples will be provided during the event. 

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

Yes. All students must be 18+ years old. Students 14-17 years old are welcome to participate with an adult guardian or parent. Those under 21 will not be able to participate in the wine tasting portion of our event.

Is my registration/ticket refundable or transferrable?

Yes. Tickets are refundable or transferable to another class up to seven days before an event. Tickets are transferable to another student for the same class at any time. Within seven days of the event, we do not offer refunds or class credits.
